Marc - excellent repartee, which I so enjoy….however, I don’t see Stephen Miller silent and contemplative - I think he would assume the air of arrogant argumentative superiority that he always has - he is a soul-less man.
Author, you are too kind in your depiction of the despicable Mr. Miller. That man is nothing more than a filthy, racist piece of s**t. But I like the depiction of the poet. And the vision of Lady Liberty standing tall in the hazy distance.
Marc, It’s Saturday morning 7/28. This comment page is the only way to contact you, for me. Please, please take time to watch Sarah Longwell of The Bulwark interview my hero Heather Cox Richardson. It’s extremely important to dissect what these two brilliant women are saying about our 2024 election. Also, HCR has the historical receipts. Anyway, it’s important and I value your analytic brain in sifting through complicated issues as these issues are. Thank you. CBA. Hoping to hear from you.
This is wonderful, Marc. Reminiscing now about my immigration journey here from England in 1958. The Cunard Line boat brought us past the Statue of Liberty.
And the same to you. I’ve taken to saying “Happy Everything to Everybody” in order to cover the bases. I used to say “Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year” when things were rather insular in the UK.
Very nice parody Marc. However, I must (gently) confess that I thought your vision of Miller - in this exchange - was a bit too kind. His overwhelming demeanor and inability to pause (or just shut up when necessary) just cannot be fully portrayed in a written exchange. In my humble estimation, it is Miller who should be sent away as a parasite on our society.
The Statue of Liberty was a beacon of hope for so many immigrants arriving to the US since it was gifted to the US from France (1865). The raised torch was usually the first sight that was seen by approaching boats in NY Harbor. There have been many political statements made at the expense of immigrants and people arriving from other countries. The fact remains that many scientific, cultural and artistic contributions have been brought to the US from weary travelers who came here to seek a better life. We can never know what is within a person that they will contribute to society. To close our doors would be wrong and an injustice to so many families who came here to assimilate into our culture. It remains to be seen whether a comprehensive reform can be instituted for illegal immigrants to become citizens. I hope the United States can continue to be a beacon of hope to those seeking a more stable life. Good essay Marc.
It’s no small irony that someone in the French government asked that Pres. Trump send back the Statue of Liberty. Since its entire purpose is now being mocked by our current administration.
This song was our 8th grade Graduation Song. we learned the words, to be sung at our Graduation Ceremony. In Social Studies, we Had to Study and Pass, the test full exam; on the entire the very Stringent, Illinois State Constitution. Along with the Full years Sudy, devoted to the United States Constitution.
The Exam on the U.S. Constitution and all 3 Branches of U.S. Government was Mandatory. passing grade was 90% or Above. If less, you didn’t graduate until grade was 90- or higher! Grueling, some took it 2-3 X to pass.
To graduate from High School, we had to do that again! Same Stringent Requirements. This was in Illinois, in 1960’s. No messing around. We also had to take English Classes, learn Proper English, Punctuation and Grammer. 2nd yr, Sophomore was All technical-Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation.
1st year, All Literature: Short Stories, Clasical American. 3rd Year English an option-Creative Writing if did well 1sr 2 years. or Choice of English Novels. 4Th English Poetry & English Lit, Options. College Pep.
This one is spot-on and so beyond appropriate, stretching into our current reality. Many have said that to influence the President you just need to be the last person in the room. It’s the last thing he hears that he’ll often run with…and Mr. Miller’s office is in the perfect position. He’s had more influence on the demise of our immigration system than 99.9% of any other source. He is a walking dichotomy…from a family of immigrants who fled homelands to avoid the very persecution he is now advocating.
Wow! I wish I could memorize this so I could rebut the xenophobic nonsense I hear from MAGAs I have the misfortune to interact with. Maybe I will try. Thank you for this.
Excellent Marc, thank you and Happy Holidays to you and yours and everyone commenting! I had to recite what is written on the Statue of Liberty in a school play 👩🦳

Your assessment of Miller is spot on! Thanks

And to you as well.
Good one!

That packs of powerful punch. It hits at the hypocrisy of the right wing propaganda. Great article.
Thanks so much, Allan.
