You are welcome. The comparison jumped out at me the moment Walz started speaking.

Marc, first, I totally agree. Second, Harry Truman sent my Uncle Joe to Europe post WWII to help with holocaust survivors. Thank you for that great article. Now let’s get them elected

You are quite welcome

Nice article, and neither man had to resort to belittling people, name-calling, or any other related ugly attacks on people to succeed.

I remember when Dwight Eisenhower was elected and I vividly recall my parents praising Truman.

Delightful article and the parallels are striking.

Thank you, Marc!

Thanks so much, Gloria. I enjoyed researching and writing it.

Excellent article, Marc. You are the first I have seen to make the comparison. I had the same opinion since I first saw and read about Tim. Truman has been my hero for years. I have read several books about him. I have visited the Truman Presidential library in Missouri. Like most people he made some good decisions as well as some bad ones.

Thanks for your comment. I regard Truman like you do. Among his great decisions were being the first to recognize Israel, and desegregating the Armed Forces and Civil Service.

One of my favorite stories to tell in my speeches is about Truman's courting of his wife. Several years ago, I turned it into a slide show that can be found here: https://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/the-power-of-persistence-12296772/12296772#3

Interesting and well written article. I will always be drawn to leaders who were born into working class homes and who seem to understand the majority of the constituents that they serve. It is obvious when I hear Tim Waltz speak that not only does he understand the plights of working class families but enjoys talking and listening to everyday people. I feel that the greatest leaders have that quality. Pres. Obama jumps to mind. Thanks for drawing the parallels between these two leaders in your essay.

I’m in the middle of a bio on Truman and he’s fascinating. Good to see you Marc: I was booted off of LinkedIn for “frank speak.” Didn’t get to say goodbye! But now, can “see” you again. Terri

Harry Truman actually fought in a real war.

Martha’s Vineyard, surrounded by average struggling Americans, would have been better.

Actually, Walz served temporarily as a Command Sargent Major, but wasn’t able to attend the Sargent Major training school prior to his retirement.

So the options for retiring at that point of service would be either.

1st Sargent (E8) which is a Company Sargent. A Senior NCO of the entire Company.

Or

Master Sargent (E8) which is a Principal NCO at the battalion level.

More than likely Walz retired at the Master Sargent level having fully completed the rank of Master Sargent and had not entered the Sargent Major training school.

Skippy - I am fairly sure that what you wrote in your screed means something to somebody somewhere…

It’s spelled sergeant to those who actually served, especially in combat zones.

You will forgive spellchecker.

A pre send spell checker app or screen showing would be helpful.

But you get the point right skippy?

Unless you don’t.

Military service should be mandatory post HS.

& for immigrants upon arrival, that would diffuse the hype.

The USMC people I grew up with were busy dying by alcoholism/drug abuse/family dismantling, it was enough to keep them from killing each other and to save the family.

The safety glass cabinet “break glass only in an emergency” is wearing thin.

Revenge & vengeance are neither in the bible or the U.S. Constitutional laws of the land.

There is an obvious difference between your opponent and your enemy.

Your enemy is within your mind, your opponent is temporal and subject to intelligent reasoning one would hope.

The divisiveness is the key;

Where divisiveness prevails, intelligent reasoning is absent.

Too bad ppl are gonna hate on this, Marc. A segment of the population cannot see forward to a bright future.

I’ve posted before abt Canada’s Tommy Douglas and I’ve referred to Tim Walz as a prairie progressive and now you’ve shown us that Harry Truman was too. Thanks for the history!
