In a rapidly shifting political landscape, the Ten Commandments—ancient principles of morality, justice, and integrity—can serve as a powerful framework for resisting ideologies and initiatives that endanger democracy. Project 2025, backed by Trump and his allies, presents itself as a policy blueprint for a new conservative wave but harbors authoritarian aims. Here are ten modern commandments inspired by the ancient moral code to guide a peaceful and determined resistance to Trumpism and Project 2025. Though I am approaching 80 years old, I will follow all of them, for my children, grandchildren, and, when I have them, great grandchildren
1. Thou shalt defend the truth.
The first step to countering any authoritarian movement is to defend the truth. Trumpism and Project 2025 have relied on misinformation to cultivate distrust in democratic institutions and undermine public discourse. Embrace and promote fact-based information, call out falsehoods, and support journalism that strives for accuracy and objectivity. This foundation of truth underpins every other commandment.
2. Thou shalt uphold justice and equality.
One of the core values of democracy is equal treatment under the law. Project 2025’s agenda threatens to reverse decades of progress in civil rights by limiting voting rights and targeting marginalized groups. To resist these regressive policies, prioritize and support initiatives that uphold justice and equality. This includes volunteering with civil rights organizations, attending town halls, and voting for leaders committed to social justice.
3. Thou shalt cherish compassion and empathy.
Trumpism frequently appeals to fear and division, encouraging followers to blame societal problems on certain groups. Reject this strategy by practicing compassion and empathy. Engage in open dialogue, listen to others, and stand against policies that dehumanize or harm individuals based on their race, religion, or identity. Empathy fosters unity, countering the divisive rhetoric of authoritarianism.
4. Thou shalt support freedom of speech and expression.
Free speech is fundamental to resisting any authoritarian agenda. Trumpism and Project 2025 attempt to stifle dissenting voices by attacking journalists, educators, and activists. Speak up against censorship, advocate for a free press, and support initiatives that protect academic freedom and free expression. Encourage debate and diverse perspectives as antidotes to one-dimensional political narratives.
5. Thou shalt protect democratic institutions.
The strength of democracy lies in its institutions, but Trumpism has shown contempt for them by disregarding established norms and questioning election results. Project 2025 would continue this erosion of trust. Defend institutions such as the judicial system, free elections, and checks and balances. Participate in local government, educate yourself on democratic processes, and support candidates who respect these principles.
6. Thou shalt engage in peaceful protest.
Historically, peaceful protest has been a powerful tool for change. Trumpism has dismissed protests as “unpatriotic,” seeking to quell public dissent. Resist by participating in nonviolent protests and joining movements that advocate for democratic values. Whether it’s marching, signing petitions, or attending rallies, peaceful protest sends a powerful message that democracy belongs to the people, not to any one leader or ideology.
7. Thou shalt honor the environment.
Project 2025 aims to roll back environmental protections, prioritizing short-term economic gains over long-term sustainability. Honor the planet by supporting policies and organizations committed to combating climate change and protecting natural resources. Advocate for green energy and sustainable practices to resist the agenda’s environmentally harmful proposals.
8. Thou shalt promote education and critical thinking.
Education is the antidote to propaganda, and an educated public is essential to a functioning democracy. Trumpism has encouraged distrust of science and intellectualism, and Project 2025 may seek to reshape education to align with its values. Counter this by promoting critical thinking, supporting public education, and encouraging lifelong learning. An informed citizenry can better discern truth from misinformation and stand firm against authoritarian influence.
9. Thou shalt work to expand voting rights.
Voting is a fundamental democratic right, yet Project 2025 includes proposals that could restrict access to the ballot box. The right to vote is not just about access; it’s about ensuring every voice is heard. Advocate for voting rights by supporting initiatives that expand access to voting, whether by mail, early voting, or voter registration drives. Resist any attempt to disenfranchise Americans and strengthen the democratic process.
10. Thou shalt reject authoritarianism.
The ultimate commandment for resisting Trumpism and Project 2025 is to reject authoritarianism in all forms. Trumpism glorifies a style of leadership that centralizes power, dismisses criticism, and weakens the principles of representative governance. To counter this, be vigilant, be active in local and national politics, and remain committed to the ideals of democracy, transparency, and accountability. Stand with leaders who prioritize the public good over personal power.
Conclusion
By adopting these Ten Commandments as guiding principles, we can resist Trumpism and Project 2025 with integrity, resilience, and hope. Each commandment emphasizes a core democratic value that Trumpism seeks to undermine. Together, they create a roadmap for safeguarding democracy in an era of political uncertainty.
In the face of an aggressive, authoritarian movement, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But just as the ancient commandments have served as moral guidance through history, these modern principles can light the way forward. They remind us that democracy isn’t merely a system of government; it’s a commitment to truth, justice, compassion, freedom, and equality for all. By holding true to these commandments, we uphold the best of humanity and protect the future of our nation.
