In America, we do not measure strength in columns of tanks. Our power is moral, constitutional, civic. It lies in the peaceful transfer of power, the ballot box, the rights of the individual.
I love that quote above Marc. Military parades in dictatorships such as North Korea and Russia are meant to intimidate the people; keeping them in line. There is no place for that in America. We use the military when it is needed and not to harass, intimidate and be a bully to our own people. From everything I have read about President Eisenhower, he was a just man with principles and honor. He would NOT agree with this proposed military parade. Great essay.
Thanks Karen. I never knew Ike but I knew his brother Milton, then the President of Johns Hopkins. He was brilliant, kind and humble. Milton extended himself to my Dad and me in a way that my Dad talked about it until he died.
Thank you Mark for this disturbing letter, What a waste of money and time and respectability. When rump speaks of suckers and losers, he is speaking into a mirror looking directly at himself. He is disgusting.
Trump is a would be fascist dictator and I fear that is ultimate is to become just that. I find what is happening to be very alarming and I’m dismayed at so many Americans continue to support Trump. These are not the Americans I grew up with from the time of my childhood. Marc thank you for this wonderful post.
Great piece Marc. It created the thought in my head that Ike may be walking the earth, having spun around in his grave enough times to be resurrected. Of course, there would be millions of his counterparts in the same condition today.
Eisenhower was probably the last of the great Republican Presidents and with the current state of the party, he may very well remain as such forever. Far from perfect, but having a good understanding of his role as leader of the free world.
Perhaps that letter might inspire his cohort George Patton to send you one as well?

Beautifully written. I can’t understand how anyone thinks this “parade” is a good idea. It’s disgusting! Thank you!
Amen 👏👏👏👏👏
