Every day in the United States, more than 10,000 people turn 65. By 2030, one in five Americans will be retirement age, and over the next five years alone, nearly 30 million people are expected to retire. We are entering the largest retirement wave in U.S. history. Yet far too many people are stepping into it unprepared for what comes next.
Retirement is often imagined as a reward: unlimited leisure after decades of work. But when the structure, identity, and purpose of daily employment suddenly disappear, many retirees are caught off guard. Without a plan for how to spend time, stay mentally and physically engaged, and remain connected to others, retirement can feel less like freedom and more like drift. As George Burns once joked, “Retirement at sixty-five is ridiculous. When I was sixty-five, I still had pimples.” Beneath the humor is a serious truth: retirement is not an ending - it’s a major life transition that demands intention.
One of the biggest mistakes people make is assuming fulfillment will arrive automatically. After all, the career is over; now there’s time to “do whatever you want.” But open time without purpose quickly becomes a void. I have seen many people in their late sixties and seventies drift into retirement without a clear vision. They lose the daily rhythm that once shaped their days and with it, a sense of meaning. They may not even know what day it is.
A satisfying retirement doesn’t happen by accident. It requires planning several years in advance. Not rigid scheduling, but a thoughtful vision of how you want to live. Retirement should be less about escaping work and more about embracing purpose. As C.S. Lewis wrote, “You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” A retirement plan is the framework that allows those dreams to take form. Fortunately, I made one.
Health is the foundation of every good retirement. Physical activity sustains energy, balance, and independence, and it provides built-in social connection. Whether it’s walking, swimming, tennis, or going to the gym, movement gives structure to the day and guards against isolation and depression. I’m in the gym almost every morning at 8:00 a.m., and that routine anchors my life in retirement.
Carl Jung captured it perfectly: “We cannot live the afternoon of life according to the program of life’s morning.” The physical routines of a working life vanish in retirement; new ones must replace them. Fitness centers, yoga classes, and group activities do more than keep the body strong. They create belonging. For many retirees, physical engagement becomes the reason to get up each morning.
Equally essential is intellectual engagement. The mind thrives on challenge and curiosity. Libraries, community centers, and colleges offer book clubs, lectures, language classes, and writing workshops designed specifically for retirees. Joining a library isn’t just about books. It’s about joining a learning community.
Albert Einstein said, “Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death.” Retirement offers something rare: time. Time to read deeply, explore long-ignored interests, learn new technologies, and stay engaged with the world. Mental activity builds resilience and keeps life interesting.
Any good retirement plan must also be flexible. Mine included part-time executive coaching, which remains deeply gratifying. But six years after leaving law practice, I discovered an entirely new calling: writing. I never anticipated that path, yet it has enriched my life immeasurably. A retirement plan should never be a cage. It should be a compass.
Retirement also invites attention to the inner life. For some, this is religious; for others, it’s meditation, nature, journaling, or service. What matters is connection, to yourself, to others, and to something larger. Gandhi said it best: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Volunteer work transforms free time into meaningful time. Studies consistently show that retirees who volunteer report greater happiness, better health, and stronger social ties. A close friend of mine in his seventies works in a hospital auxiliary helping patients; he finds it profoundly fulfilling.
Another challenge many retirees underestimate is the loss of professional identity. When a career disappears, people can feel invisible. I am no longer a practicing lawyer, and I feel no loss. A thoughtful retirement plan anticipates this by cultivating new communities: clubs, classes, volunteer organizations, and hobby groups where relationships can grow.
Eleanor Roosevelt observed, “Since you get more joy out of giving joy to others, you should put a good deal of thought into the happiness that you are able to give.” Retirement isn’t about retreat; it’s about reconnection, sharing time, wisdom, and presence.
Plans will evolve. Interests change. Health shifts. I never foresaw becoming a writer, yet that unexpected turn has been one of retirement’s greatest gifts. Adaptive planning - that is, planning that allows growth - is the secret.
Pablo Picasso once said, “It takes a long time to become young.” In many ways, retirement is that second youth: a return to curiosity, creativity, and choice. But discovery requires awareness and willingness to experiment.
Retirement is not a withdrawal from life. It is a renewal. It offers the chance to redefine identity beyond career and productivity, to focus on being, not just doing. But renewal doesn’t happen by chance. It requires preparation, reflection, and intention.
As Mark Twain wrote, “The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” The same is true of retirement. Start early. Envision how you want to live. Engage your body, challenge your mind, nurture your spirit, and stay connected. Volunteer, learn, explore, write, evolve.
For those who approach retirement thoughtfully and flexibly, the years ahead can be the most rewarding of all, not a period of decline, but one of renewed vitality, deepened wisdom, and enduring joy. Your best years may still be ahead.

Your advice, and the perspectives you quote, I think, will help many embrace the challenges and rewards of active retirement.
I especially enjoyed Pablo Picasso’s “It takes a long time to become young.” Many thanks.
